The Canadian Federation of Independent Business found that 45% of small businesses experienced a random cyberattack in a single year, and 27% were targeted deliberately. Attackers choose small businesses because the defences are weaker and the payments are still real money. A business with four staff and no IT support is an easier target than a bank, and the attacker gets paid either way.
    A business email assessment is a check of how your company email is set up and whether it can be abused. It looks at whether someone outside your company can send email that appears to come from your business, whether login codes are switched on, whether hidden forwarding rules have been added to any mailbox, and whether old accounts still have access. For most small businesses it is the single highest-value check available, because email fraud is the most expensive attack this size of business faces.
    No. Free antivirus is built for a single home user and has two gaps that matter for a business. It does not report to anyone, so if something is found on a staff member’s laptop, nobody outside that laptop knows. And it does not cover the attacks aimed at businesses specifically, like fake invoices and stolen logins, which are not viruses at all. Business antivirus costs a few dollars per device per month and alerts your provider, not just the person using the computer.
    Ransomware is software that locks every file on your computers and network, then demands payment to unlock them. For a small business the real damage is not the ransom — it is being unable to invoice, quote, or access your customer list, often for weeks. The only reliable protection is a backup that has been tested by actually restoring from it, combined with blocking the common ways ransomware arrives: email attachments, stolen remote-access passwords, and unpatched computers.

    The common signs are: customers or suppliers mentioning emails you never sent, replies arriving to messages you did not write, sent items you do not recognise, or a supplier telling you their bank details “changed” when they did not. Many compromises show no obvious sign at all, because the attacker is quietly reading mail and waiting for an invoice to appear.
